U.S. "disappointed" by Ali Aliyev’s criminal conviction - State Department

Washington on Friday reacted to the recent arrest of Ali Aliyev, chairman of the Citizens and Development Party, and a vocal government critic in Azerbaijan, who was convicted on defamation charges last month.

"We were disappointed by Mr. Aliyev’s criminal conviction."  a State Department spokesperson told TURAN’s Washington correspondent. "We urge the government of Azerbaijan to respect its international obligations, including the right to freedom of expression."

*Ali Aliyev was sentenced to five months in prison on charges of libel on January 13, following an interview he gave to the "Osmanqızı TV" Youtube channel last December, where he had raised his doubts about the official narrative involving some survivors of a recent helicopter crash.
