Twenty Dead, More Than One Thousand Injured in Earthquake in Turkey
Ankara / 25.01.20 / Turan: The death toll from the earthquake in eastern Turkey reached 20, and the injured are 1,015, the Anadolu news agency reported.
The earthquake occurred at 20:55 local time on January 24 with a magnitude of 6.8. The epicenter of tremors was in the county of Sivrice in the province of Elazığ.
According to the Turkish Government’s Emergency Prevention and Response Administration (AFAD), 228 aftershocks of magnitude 4.0 or more were recorded after the earthquake. Tremors were felt in the provinces adjacent to Elazığ (Adana, Hatay, Osmaniye, Tunceli, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Malatya, Mardin, Samsun, Tokat, Çorum and Kayseri), as well as in northern Syria.
In the city of Elazığ, four buildings were destroyed. Search and rescue operations are underway in the natural disaster area.
Elazığ Airport is operating normally. There are no problems with electricity and gas supply in the region.
AFAD and the Turkish Red Crescent have sent more than a hundred trucks with tents, sleeping sets, blankets, mobile kitchens, heating equipment and food to the region. -02D-
