Amnesty international Condemns Arrest of Elchin Mammad
Baku / 03.04.20 / Turan: Amnesty international condemned the arrest of the human rights activist Elchin Mammad in Azerbaijan.
The organization’s statement indicates that he was arrested after publishing a critical report on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.
Amnesty International called for letters to be sent to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the country's Ambassador to the United States, Elin Suleymanov, calling for the immediate release of Mammad.
The organization also notes that Mammad has been harassed by the authorities for many years because of his human rights work.
In 2015, the Sumgait Youth Legal Education organization headed by him was subjected to criminal investigation, he was detained himself, and restrictions were imposed on his foreign trips.
The new criminal case is also based on far-fetched accusations and is revenge for his human rights work and critical reports.
Mammad was detained on March 30 several days after the publication of a critical report on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. On March 31, the court chose a preventive measure in respect of him in the form of an arrest for a period of 3 months in connection with the charge of theft. The complaint against Mammad was filed by a woman who had previously slandered the journalist Anar Mammadov. The arrested person himself denied the charges. Mammad’s arrest was condemned by local human rights activists. –06D-
