International human rights organizations have condemned the pressure on Yalcin Imanov
The Norwegian Helsinki Committee and international human rights coalition "Sport for Human Rights" expressed concern about the initiation of disciplinary proceedings in Azerbaijan against the lawyer Yalcin Imanov. In a statement, received by Turan from the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, expressed concern about the pressure on the lawyer due to his critical comments about the biased judicial investigation against his client, the opposition member Mamed Ibrahim.
According to the Secretary General of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee Bjørn Engesland, pressure on the Imanov and other independent lawyers contradict international obligations of Azerbaijan.
International law pays particular attention to the independence of lawyers and their freedom from threats and pressure in connection with professional activities. Imanov as an experienced lawyer since 2007, as a member of the Bar Association defended many political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
Among his clients there are many well-known activists and journalists, including Khadija Ismailova, Mammad Ibrahim, Fuad Gahramanli and Murad Adilov, Nijat Aliyev, arrested on trumped up charges.
Norwegian Helsinki Committee and international human rights coalition "Sport for Human Rights" calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to put an end to pressure on the lawyers defending members of NGOs, journalists and activists.
On February 12th Narimanov Court judge Turgay Huseynov ordered to send an appeal to the Bar Lawyers on disciplinary liability of Imanov. The reason for this was the criticism of lawyers deviation defense motions and objective investigation of the case of the Popular Front Party activist Mammad Ibrahim.- 16d-
