PFPA activist sentenced to 3.5 years in prison
Baku/28.04.21/Turan: On April 28, the Khatai District Court of Baku, chaired by Ibrahim Ibrahimli, sentenced an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Sayeed Mammadzade (Bakuvi) to 3.5 years in prison.
The prosecutor asked to sentence the activist to 4 years.
On May 18, 2020, the Khatai District Court of Baku arrested Mammadzade on charges of hooliganism with the use of weapons or objects used as weapons (Article 221.3 of the Criminal Code). He was charged with stabbing a citizen. On July 20, the Khatai District Court replaced Mammadzade's preliminary detention with house arrest.
Sayeed Mammadzade claims that there was no hooliganism. The real reason for the arrest is the harsh criticism of the government and senior officials on his Facebook page.
During the trial, Mammadzade denied all charges, calling them far-fetched.
The head of the Popular Front Party, Ali Karimli, said that the arrest of Sayeed Mammadzade, a famous athlete of the country who has repeatedly raised the Azerbaijani flag at prestigious competitions, is a political order of the authorities. -03B-
