Police announced the suppression of the street procession in the Yasamal district
Baku/27.01.19/Turan: Baku police reported on the suppression of an unauthorized demonstration in the Yasamal district of Baku. On January 26, at about 15:30, a group of 50-60 people, violating the requirements of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Freedom of Assembly, attempted to hold a march on Mirali Seyidov Street in the Yasamal district, the Baku Main Police Department said. "A group of people, allowing illegal actions, began to attract the attention of others, create panic among the population, violate the rights of citizens to rest and demonstrated disobedience to police officers serving in the territory," the press release reads. The police stopped the "illegal street procession, accompanied by a violation of public order." Fifteen detained protesters were taken to the Yasamal District Police Department. Ten detainees on the basis of a court decision were administratively arrested. The rest was given a verbal warning, after which they were released, the report said.
On January 26, the opposition National Council of Democratic Forces appointed a rally at the Mahsul Stadium of the Yasamal District. The authorities did not allow the rally. The opposition criticized the refusal of the city authorities to hold a rally, but did not take decisions to hold the uncoordinated action. -06D--

On January 29, municipal elections were held in Azerbaijan, with over 16,000 candidates participating across 118 constituencies. The Central Election Commission (CEC) has already announced the names of the leading candidates on its website. Hours after the election, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov stated at a briefing that 413 out of 685 municipalities had already been formed, with 7,791 candidates identified as leaders.
