Boarding school in Sudzha
Russia, Ukraine Trade Accusations Over Attack on Boarding School in Kursk Region
In the latest escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russia and Ukraine have issued conflicting reports regarding a tragic incident at a boarding school in Sudzha, a city in Russia's Kursk region currently under Ukrainian control. Both nations accuse each other of responsibility for the deadly attack that has heightened tensions in the area.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the strike resulted in four fatalities and four severe injuries, with 84 individuals being rescued from the debris by Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, attributing it to Russian forces and stating that the school was sheltering civilians preparing for evacuation at the time of the strike.
On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense has countered these claims by asserting that the missile attack was executed by Ukrainian troops, specifically from the Sumy region of Ukraine. The Russian authorities have not provided details on casualties or damage from the incident.
This exchange of accusations comes as the region reels from another attack: a Russian missile strike on a residential building in Poltava, Ukraine. This earlier incident resulted in 14 deaths, including two children, and injured 17 others, as reported by Ukraine's State Emergency Service.
The incidents mark a severe deterioration in the already volatile situation along the border regions, where control and military actions remain fluid and highly contentious. International responses to these events are still unfolding, with calls for restraint and a return to diplomatic negotiations.

The skies on Wednesday night were clear. The pilots were in communication with air traffic control, and officials said American Eagle Flight 5342 was on a standard descent to the runway in the busy airspace above the nation’s capital. Yet somehow, the passenger jet and an Army helicopter collided midair, bursting into flames and plunging into the Potomac River in the first major fatal commercial plane crash in the United States in 16 years.
