Regional Website Editor Arrested
Baku / 10.10.18 / Turan: The editor of the hefteaz.info website, which operates in the Goychay region of Azerbaijan, Aghil Mahmudov, was arrested on October 8 in administrative order for 20 days.
He is charged with performing actions provided for in Article 535.1 (not subordinating the police) of the Administrative Offenses Code.
Turan was told by the human rights activist Oktay Gulaliyev. He believes the journalist was arrested for his critical and exposing articles and posting on Facebook.
"In November 2017, the head of the Goychay District Executive Authority filed a lawsuit against Mahmudov as a private criminal libel case. However, after several court sessions, the head of the region withdrew the lawsuit. However, after this Mahmudov continued critical publications. In recent days, he launched the Protect Chinars (sycamores) campaign to protect sycamore trees in Goychay," said the activist.
The authorities have not yet commented on the journalist's arrest. - 03B06
