Two Police Officers Killed in Gence Clashes (updated)
Baku / 10.07.18 / Turan: Two police officers were killed in the clashes between protesters and law enforcement forces in Gence on Tuesday evening. About 40 people were detained.
As reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on July 10 at about 20.00 a group of radical religious figures of 150-200 people gathered in the square in front of the Gence Executive Power and attempted to violate the public order.
Ignoring the warnings of the police officers who were performing their official duties, these persons, using blunt and piercing-cutting tools brought by themselves, resisted the law enforcers. As a result of decisive measures taken by the police, the illegal actions were stopped and about 40 people were detained and taken to the Main Police Department of Gence City. The others fled. Within 30 minutes, the public order in the center of Gence was restored.
When suppressing the illegal actions, the Deputy Chief of the Gence Police Headquarters, Colonel Ilgar Balakishiyev, and the Deputy Chief of the Nizami District Police Department, Lieutenant-Colonel Samad Abbasov, were killed by blows inflicted with piercing-cutting tools.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan instituted criminal proceedings under articles 120.2.3 (killing an official), 120.2.7 (killing two or more persons), 220.1 (riots), 228.4 (illegal carrying of weapons), and 315.2 (resistance to police using violence dangerous to life and health) of the Criminal Code.
Operational and investigative measures are continuing to expose other participants and organizers of the crime. -0-

Confrontation between Protesters and Police in Gence
Baku / 10.07.18 / Turan: On Monday evening in Gence, there were clashes between participants in a protest action and the law enforcers.
The protest was appointed through a social network in connection with the July 3 attack on the city's chief executive Elmar Veliyev. Its organizers believe the attempt on Veliyev was the result of the arbitrariness of the chief executive himself.
About two hundred protesters tried to gather in the square in front of the city administration building. Some of the protesters resisted the police. There were clashes between the police and the protesters. Dozens of people were detained. -0-

Opposition members detained for critical social media posts were released on the same day, with no reports of mistreatment by authorities, Musavat Party deputy chairman Mustafa Hajibeyli told Turan news agency.
