Boris Johnson to Become British Prime Minister
Baku / 07.23.19 / Turan: Former British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was elected leader of the Conservative Party. This means that now it is he who will replace Teresa May as the country's Prime Minister, Kommersant writes.
About 92 thousand supporters voted for Johnson, and about 46 thousand people voted for his main rival, the current Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt. The elections were held in the form of postal voting.
After the victory, the new party leader announced that he would complete the procedure of the UK leaving the European Union (Brexit) by October 31. Johnson has repeatedly stated that he is in favor of the UK leaving the EU without an agreement, if it cannot be reached before the end of October.
On May 24, British Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation. One of the possible reasons for her decision could be the unwillingness of the government to support the Brexit option presented by Mrs. May. -0-
