The number of complaints from Azerbaijan to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is increasing
In 2024, the ECHR made 39 rulings regarding Azerbaijan. In 38 of these, at least one violation of the European Convention on Human Rights was found. Only in one case were no violations identified. These statistics were presented at a press conference by the head of the ECHR at the end of 2024, the legal information website aihmaz.org reported.
The most common violation mentioned in the decisions regarding Azerbaijan was the right to a fair trial, which was cited in 20 rulings. Other violations included:
- Property rights violations in 8 cases
- Torture in 6 cases
- Freedom of expression violations in 5 cases
- Violations of the right to liberty and personal security, and personal and family life, in 4 cases each.
Currently, 1,968 complaints from Azerbaijan are awaiting consideration by the ECHR, placing the country in 8th place in terms of pending cases. At the same time, the number of incoming complaints from Azerbaijan is growing. In 2022, 389 complaints were filed, in 2023 there were 438, and in 2024, this number increased to 600.

Journalist Nargiz Abaslamova, held in Baku's Detention Center No. 1, was subjected to violence by a guard. While passing by the cell of her colleague Sevinj Vagifgizi, Abaslamova tried to greet her, reported on Abzas Media's Facebook page. However, guard Aygul Babaeva forcibly dragged Abaslamova away and deeply scratched the journalist's arm. Abaslamova stated that this is not the first time the mentioned guard has used force and been rude to journalists. A few days ago, Babaeva also used force against Sevinj Vagifgizi.

On February 4, the ECHR announced two rulings regarding complaints filed by these applicants, as reported by the legal information website aihmaz.org. The applicants contested the violation of their property rights during the demolition of their homes for the construction of the "Winter Park" in central Baku, as well as the failure to provide fair compensation. They also requested that the Strasbourg court recognize violations of their rights to a fair trial, respect for private life, effective legal remedies, the right to submit an individual complaint, and other related rights.
