Dunja Miyavtovich and Nil Muzhnieks condemn the verdict H.Ismaylov
The OSCE Special Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatovic, and the Commissioner for Human Rights, Nil Muzhnieks issued a joint statement in connection with the sentence of Khadija Ismailova.
According to the statement, the Azerbaijani authorities continue to suppress critical voices. "An unjust sentence against Ismaylov clearly shows that the Azerbaijani authorities continue to drown out critical voices. Once again, I call the authorities to stop the pressure on journalists," said Mijatovic.
"Khadija Ismailova has been punished for the courageous work of investigative journalist in a country where the critical voices are suppressed one after another. It is a blow to democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights in Azerbaijan," said in his turn, Muiznieks.
The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists also condemned the verdict, calling the trial of Ismayilova a "farce", and called on the authorities to cancel it.-16D-
