The problems with human rights in Azerbaijan were discussed at a Monday meeting of Civil Society Protection Committee (CSPC).
The CSPC acting chairman Gubad Ibadoglu told Turan the meeting discussed the situation with the rights of ownership in the context of the authorities' plans to demolish about 1,000 buildings declared emergency in Baku and resettlement of their residents.
It was decided to send requests to the relevant authorities asking for an explanation of the reasons for such a massive demolition of buildings and the sources of financing of the resettlement and development. Along with this CSPC plans to provide consulting services to the residents of the demolished houses.
In addition, CSPC intends to promote investigative journalism on the identification of issues of property rights in connection with the mass demolition of homes in the area of the former Soviet Street and around Baku International Bus Station.
CSPC also discussed the issue of political prisoners and torture in places of detention.
It was noted that due to the lack of an independent judiciary, the number of political prisoners has increased dramatically in recent years. On the other hand, in the absence of effective civilian control in detention the number of cases of torture and inhuman treatment is growing.
At the same time, civil society efforts in these areas are undermined by the fragmentation of the activities of human rights organizations.
It was decided to hold a forum of civil society on the issues of political prisoners and to create a coordination structure involving a wide range of independent human rights organizations.
Members of the sitting also expressed concern over the delay in the implementation of economic reforms.
It was decided that at the next meeting CSPC will discuss the matter with the participation of specialists. -06D--

During search and operational activities, on January 30 at 11:20, 16.4 kg of drugs were discovered and seized in the area of the "Geytapa" border post, located on the Iran-Azerbaijan border.
