Supreme Court Keeps Journalist under Arrest
Baku / 18.09.18 / Turan: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, under the chairmanship of Farhad Kerimov, examined the cassation appeal of the journalist Afghan Mukhtarly.
The journalist complained about the decision of the Sheki Court of Appeal, but Mukhtarly did not participate in the trial.
Attorney Elchin Sadigov supported the complaint, asking the court to satisfy it and to justify the journalist. However, Prosecutor Rovshan Taghizadeh asked to leave the decision of the court in force.
After a short meeting, the judicial board announced a decision to keep the verdict against the journalist in force.
It should be recalled that Afghan Mukhtarly was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment on a false charge of illegally crossing the state border, smuggling and the use of force against a representative of the authorities.
In fact, he was abducted by Georgian police in the center of Tbilisi and handed over to the representatives of Azerbaijan in May 2017.
Amnesty International recognizes him as a "prisoner of conscience". -0--
