Afgan Sadygov

Afgan Sadygov, head of 'Azel.TV' website, arrested in Georgia with the purpose of extradition to Azerbaijan, has gone on a dry hunger strike since 2 February. This was reported to Turan by his wife Sevinj Sadygova after a telephone conversation with her husband on 2 February.

Afgan Sadygov, who has been on hunger strike for 136 days since 2 February, also refused to take water and medicines. His wife asked her husband to stop the dry hunger strike. ‘But Afgan said he would continue his dry hunger strike until the end. His condition is extremely serious. Before the start of the dry hunger strike, he had already lost 42 kg in weight,’ Sadygova said.

‘Afgan's arrest is political in nature. Georgian authorities are fulfilling Baku's order. On 31 January he was taken to court from early morning, and the hearing started only at three o'clock in the afternoon. How can a person on hunger strike for more than 130 days be tortured like this? This once again showed the inhumanity of the Georgian authorities towards Afghan. He asked for a book in the Azeri language, his lawyer brought it, but the book was not allowed,’ Sadygova said.

At present, S.Sadygova is in a third country with her children and intends to hold a rally in front of the Georgian Embassy there.

* Afgan Sadygova and his family arrived in Georgia in December 2023, fearing persecution. In July, he was not released from Georgia to Turkey, saying he could only return to Azerbaijan.

In August, Sadygov was taken into custody at a request from Azerbaijan. In Baku, he is accused of extortion and his extradition is demanded. He has been on hunger strike since 21 September, protesting against his arrest and refusal to grant him asylum.

The Georgian authorities refused to grant him political asylum. On 28 November 2024, the Tbilisi city court ordered his extradition to Azerbaijan. On 15 January 2025, the Court of Appeal approved this decision, and on 31 January, the Tbilisi court extended Sadygov's arrest for another three months.
