Iran blocked decision to condemn terrorist attack against Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran
Baku/01.02.23/Turan: Iran, India and Syria have prevented the Non-Aligned Movement from adopting a document condemning the terrorist attack against the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran on January 27. The press service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a statement on the subject.
About 100 countries and international organizations have condemned the terrorist act against the Embassy of Azerbaijan, and stressed the need to punish all those involved in the crime.
"The Iranian side is trying its best to prevent a broad disclosure of the terrorist attack at the international level and in the organizations of which it is a member, and where decisions are made by consensus. Thus, the Iranian side protested against the draft communiqué and statement submitted by Azerbaijan to the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and thereby hampered the adoption of the said documents."
Tehran asked many countries to support its position. Of the 120 countries in the Non-Aligned Movement, only Syria and India supported Iran, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
The three countries justified their position with the fact that terrorist attacks in individual countries have allegedly not been condemned by the NAM and bilateral issues between individual countries have not been brought to the level of the organization.
In reality, however, NAM has adopted several documents condemning terrorist attacks in member countries and emphasizing the necessity of strengthening protection of diplomatic missions.
Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry condemns this "provocative step by the Iranian side".
"Azerbaijan will use all relevant international platforms to widely condemn the terrorist act against the Embassy and punish those responsible for it," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a press release. -06D-
