Amnesty International's strange report
Baku/30.03.22/Turan: Amnesty International has published an annual report on the human rights situation in the world. The report indicates that over the past year, the Azerbaijani government continued to persecute those who criticize the authorities and crackdown on peaceful protests.
Imran Aliyev, public activist and founder of the website meclis.info, was released this morning after a 20-hour detention in the Interior Ministry's department for combatting organized crime.
Also, public activist Samir Ashurov was deported from Germany to Azerbaijan.
All these are reported in the program "Hard question" by human rights activist and co-founder of the human rights organization Line of Defense (Müdafiə xətti) Zafar Ahmadov.
According to him, he is not satisfied with the report, because it's not complete and drafted over the sleeves. "Azerbaijan is mentioned practically in all sections of the report, both in the sections "Freedom of Expression", and "Torture and Ill-treatment", as well as in the section "Justice, Discrimination", etc. But, how? Look, in other countries, on the same issues. For example, in connection with gender problems Poland is most often mentioned; in connection with the Istanbul Declaration - Turkey, Hungary ... and examples are given. When it comes to Azerbaijan, it is mentioned in passing - as if everything is OK in general, but there are some difficulties," Ahmedov said.
To his thinking, Amnesty International's report is stunning: "The last section of the report, 'Torture and Ill-treatment' talks about this ... I quote verbatim: 'Allegations of Armenian prisoners of torture and other ill-treatment by Azerbaijani forces during detention, capture, captivity have not been thoroughly investigated.'
'Imagine,' says the human rights activist, 'in 2020-2021, torture and ill-treatment was exclusively against Armenians!
"Obviously, the treatment of prisoners of war should be fully in accord with norms of international conventions. However, there are many facts of much more brutal torture and abuse of its own citizens. But why doesn't the organization mention this? Say, everything is good, but we treat the prisoners badly..." Akhmedov is indignant.-0-
