Is a religious war starting in the world; is a wave of anti-Semitism breaking out?
Baku/31.10.23/Turan: After the protesters attacked the runway of Makhachkala airport on the night of October 29-30, the Israeli Foreign Ministry demanded that Russia protect Israelis and Jews, detain those who threaten them.
Meanwhile, Israel has recalled its diplomats in Turkey to reassess bilateral relations in light of recent statements by the Turkish political leadership, especially President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen stated.
Dagestan, which is part of the Russian Federation, is a border neighbor of Azerbaijan. Turkey is a fraternal country and a strategic partner of Azerbaijan. Israel is one of the countries that constantly supports Azerbaijan and has very close relations.
Can these events affect Israeli-Azerbaijani relations?
What does it all mean? Anti-Semitism or religious warfare?
Is there anti-Semitism in Azerbaijan or can it arise?
Conflict analyst Arif Yunus answered these questions in the program "Difficult question".
In his opinion, what is happening, not only in Dagestan, but also the actions that have taken place all over the world, is not a manifestation of anti-Semitism. "This is a reaction to recent events, to the conflict. And in the reaction to this conflict, two factors play a major role. Firstly, interstate relations, and the choice of people associated with this conflict. In the conditions of peace, people have broad selection criteria. But during a conflict, the field of criteria narrows, and the choice has to be made between white and black. And everyone faces a choice. In such conditions, a person, having made the "wrong" choice (not in favor of his people or the state), turns out to be an enemy of the people. The choice is limited. And interstate relations play a major role here," he said.
The expert urged to pay attention to the chronology of recent events. "Even before the events of October 7 (the Hamas rocket attack on Israel), all issues in Russia were related to the fighting in Ukraine. Do you support Russia? If "yes", then everything is fine. If you are on the side of Ukraine, then you are the enemy. In this regard, propaganda will be promoted. Society will react," he said.
Yunus recalled that relations between Russia and Israel began to deteriorate last year. "Israel wanted to remain neutral and at one time functioned as a mediator. However, it has recently begun to provide support to Ukraine. Relations began to deteriorate and this was followed by the events of October 7, Hamas and other issues," Yunus said.
As for Russia, according to him, it openly supports Hamas. "On October 26, an official Hamas delegation headed by Aby Mazrouk, a member of the movement's politburo, paid a visit to Moscow and was received at a high level. Two days later, on October 28, Israel issued an official statement criticizing Moscow. On the morning of October 29, Israel sent a note to the Russian Foreign Ministry. And in the evening of the same day, unexpectedly, allegedly anti-Semitic demonstrations began in Makhachkala, Khasavyurt, and Nalchik. In fact, this is a manifestation of Russia's dissatisfaction with Israel's position on Ukraine," says the conflict analyst.
