Who is on the YAP's electoral list? Those who are running and those who are not...

On July 17, at the regular meeting of the Board of the "New Azerbaijan Party" (YAP), a list of candidates for the extraordinary parliamentary elections on September 1 was determined for all 125 electoral districts.

Party veterans, such as Ali Ahmedov, Mubariz Gurbanli, Khanlar Fatiyev, Sayyad Aran, Eyvaz Gurbanov, who were previously elected as deputies from YAP but were not candidates in the last elections in 2020, have been nominated again.

The ruling party did not nominate former chairmen of the ruling party, Vasif Talibov, the former chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan, Oktay Asadov, former chairman of the Milli Majlis and deputy of the II, III, IV, V convocations, Sattar Mohbaliyev, chairman of the Confederation of Trade Unions, Isa Habibbayli, president of ANAS, the former rector of the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute, Agia Nakhchivanly, chairman of the Committee on Family, Women, and Children Affairs of the Milli Majlis, deputy of the IV, V, and VI convocations, and Sadagat Valiyeva, chairman of the Nizami District Organization.

At the same time, the list does not include the editor-in-chief of the "Azerbaijan" newspaper, Bakhtiyar Sadygov, who received a mandate from the Agdam Electoral District No. 119 in the II, III, IV, and V convocations.

The children of former deputies have also been nominated. Thus, Veliyev Samir Ahmed oglu, whose candidacy was put forward by the Narmanov Second Electoral District No. 20, is the son of former deputy Ahmed Veliyev, and Mahir Tahir oglu Suleymanly, whose candidacy was put forward by the Shabran-Khachmaz Electoral District No. 56, is the son of Tahir Suleymanov, a former deputy of Siyazan. Aygun Shayitdin gizi Mammadova, nominated from the Khazar First Electoral District No. 12, is the daughter of former deputy, long-time member of the Central Election Commission, and deputy chairman of the CEC Shayitdin Aliyev.

In total, out of 125 candidates, 66 have been previously declared candidates from YAP. Among them are interesting names: a professor, a scientist, a school director, a school teacher, a youth center chairman, a singer, a dentist, and representatives of other professions.

PFAP, National Council, III Republic Platform will not participate in the elections

The Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party (PFAP), National Council, and the III Republic Platform have announced that they will not participate in the elections. Although the Musavat party has decided to participate in the elections, its leader Isa Gambar and Majlis chairman Arif Hajili will not take part.

Sabir Rustamkhanli, chairman of the Civil Solidarity Party (CSP), Igbal Agazade, chairman of the Umid Party, Ilyas Ismayilov, chairman of the Justice Party, Meydan Babaev, chairman of the Supreme Assembly, and another deputy chairman Elhan Shukurlu have announced that they will not run.

This was reported by political observer Nasimi Mamedli in the program "Difficult Question," hosted by Kamran Mahmudov.

According to him, the YAP, which has been in power for more than 30 years, is undoubtedly a monopolistic party. This political monopoly has completely destroyed the atmosphere of political competition in the country. There is no competitive arena for political parties.

Therefore, according to the expert, the government can appoint any candidate, even the most obscure one, to be a deputy (of whom there are plenty in the current YAP list).

He also noted that in the parliament, apart from the PEA, there are individuals whom the government has tasked with performing opposition functions, as well as individuals who are meant to appear as independent deputies.

"In the previous parliament, there were about 70 YAP members. But other persons in the Milli Majlis (MM), perhaps with a few exceptions, are unable to express an opinion different from the party line (YAP)," Mamedli noted, adding that the government does not need alternative ideas, initiatives, or activity in the MM.

"The MM is needed by the government only as a submissive body turned into an appendage of the executive power," he is convinced.
