Artifacts from four Crimean museums have been repatriated from the Netherlands to Ukraine, marking a significant move in the ongoing cultural dispute. The National Museum of History of Ukraine announced the transfer, revealing that the Allard Pearson Museum relinquished custody of the artifacts, which will be housed in Ukraine until the de-occupation of Crimea.
The meticulous process began in November when items from Crimean museums underwent an independent evaluation before being carefully packed in adherence to museum protocols. The artifacts, totaling 565 objects, encompass a diverse range, including antique sculptures, Scythian and Sarmatian jewelry, and ancient Chinese lacquer boxes. Currently, experts are scrutinizing the condition of these historical treasures.
The National Museum of History of Ukraine, identified as the designated storage site for the collections of Crimean museums during legal disputes, pledged to exert every effort to preserve and showcase the artifacts. The collection, now gaining international political attention, will be closely monitored globally, placing responsibility on those instrumental in the decision to repatriate the collection to Ukraine.
Fyodor Androshchuk, the Director General of the National Museum of History of Ukraine, emphasized the need for unprecedented protection and economic support for the collection. Acknowledging the political resonance surrounding the artifacts, Androshchuk stressed the collective responsibility to ensure the well-being and exhibition of these historical treasures, allowing both citizens and visitors to Ukraine to access and appreciate their cultural significance.
