27 parties applied to the Ministry of Justice for re-registration
Baku/18.07.23/Turan: In connection with the entry into force of the new law on political parties, prescribing their re-registration, 27 organizations have applied to the Ministry of Justice. At the same time, 31 parties declared self-liquidation after the adoption of the new law, the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan said in a statement.
The press release reminds that according to the new law, the number of party members must be at least 5,000 and their registration data must be submitted to the Ministry of Justice.
27 parties submitted their registers to the Ministry of Justice, indicating the names, surnames, patronymics of members, their dates of birth, registration addresses at the place of residence, membership in the regional organization in which they belong, and phone numbers.
During the verification of these data, the Ministry of Justice revealed a number of shortcomings in some parties, including the indication of persons who are not members of this party, deceased persons, repeated indications of the same persons.
In this regard, the parties were informed about the shortcomings identified in the register and they were asked to eliminate them within the period stipulated by law (30 days).
The Ministry of Justice declares its readiness to help the parties in eliminating shortcomings.
The new law on parties, which came into force on January 11 this year, has caused sharp criticism from many opposition political parties. They believe that the new law is aimed at limiting political activity and eliminating opposition parties.
Local independent experts of Azerbaijan believe that the newly adopted law does not meet democratic standards and should be changed. The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the OSCE ODIHR also gave a negative expert opinion to this document. ---05D06----
