Baku / 25.09.20 / Turan: President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev called on UN structures to ensure the implementation of Security Council resolutions on the Karabakh conflict.
“To ensure sustainable international peace and security, it is necessary to end the occupation. It is necessary to ensure compliance with the norms and principles of international law and the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions,” Aliyev said in his video speech yesterday at the general debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly.
In 1993, the UN Security Council adopted 4 resolutions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, which have not yet been implemented.
According to Resolution 853 of the UN Security Council, an updated timetable for the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan was to be drawn up. “The relevant UN institutions should contribute to the implementation of the Security Council resolutions and the return of Azerbaijani migrants to their native lands. The resolutions have no time limits and are in force until execution,” Aliyev said.
“For about 30 years Armenia continues to ignore the resolutions of the UN Security Council. Sanctions should be applied against Armenia, which is an occupying state,” Aliyev stressed.
He also pointed to the illegal settlement of the occupied territories of Armenia and, in particular, the placement of Armenians from Lebanon there. Illegal settlement is a serious violation of international law, including the 1949 Geneva Convention.
Armenia illegally exploits natural resources in the occupied territories and uses water resources to create an artificial ecological crisis.
“International companies that illegally exploit the natural resources of Azerbaijan will face legal responsibility if they do not immediately stop their illegal activities. Azerbaijan has already begun to take legal steps against individuals and companies,” the President of Azerbaijan said.
On July 12, 2020, Armenia resorted to yet another provocation in the direction of the state border in order to create a new source of tension, involve third states in the conflict and damage the strategic infrastructure of Azerbaijan.
Armenia is trying to disrupt the peace process, its goal is to maintain the status quo and achieve the annexation of the occupied territories.
The Prime Minister of Armenia is purposefully undermining the format and essence of the negotiation process. His statement “Karabakh is Armenia” is a serious blow to the negotiations.
Armenian Defense Minister calls for a "new war for new territories." Armenia is threatening to strike at large cities and important civilian infrastructure of Azerbaijan - the Mingachevir reservoir and one of the world's largest oil and gas terminals located near Baku - the Sangachal terminal, which ensures the energy security of dozens of states.
“The hostile statements of the Armenian leadership and the provocations carried out demonstrate that Armenia is preparing for a new war against Azerbaijan. We call on the UN and the international community to restrain Armenia from another military aggression,” Aliyev said.
Aliyev also critically assessed the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group, which did not produce any results.
“The presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries - Russia, France and the United States - in their statements stressed the unacceptability of the status quo. We welcome these statements, but there are not enough statements. We need real steps. The Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict must be resolved within the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. The territorial integrity of Azerbaijan has never been and will not be a subject of negotiations. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan must be fully restored. Nagorno-Karabakh is an ancient and historical Azerbaijani land. Karabakh is Azerbaijan!” Aliyev stressed.
Aliyev also expressed serious concern over the growing supply of weapons to Armenia, especially after the provocation in the Tovuz region of Azerbaijan, without specifying, however, that this is being done by Russia.
“The hot phase of the clashes on the state border ended on July 16. From the next day, from July 17 to September, we witnessed the delivery of over a thousand tons of military equipment by military cargo planes to Armenia. Considering that Armenia is one of the poorest countries in the world and does not have the ability to spend billions of dollars on weapons, then we can come to the conclusion that weapons are transferred to it free of charge. The supply of weapons to an occupying country that has carried out ethnic cleansing seriously undermines peace negotiations and encourages the occupying state to further military provocations. In this context, we call on all countries to refrain from supplying weapons to Armenia,” Aliyev said. —06-
