Belgian Parliament Does Not Plan to Recognize Second Armenian State
Baku / 04.12.20 / Turan: After the French Senate adopted a resolution on the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh on November 25, a number of foreign media outlets rushed to announce the adoption of the same document by the Belgian parliament.
Yesterday the lower House of the Parliament of France also adopted a recommendatory resolution “on the recognition of the NKR,” which is also not binding. In turn, the French Foreign Ministry announced the absence of intentions to declare part of the Azerbaijani territory an Armenian state.
On December 2, discussions were held in the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Belgian Federal Parliament, as a result of which some media issued a fake about recognition of “NKR” by the Belgian parlamentarians.
Turan's source in Belgium said that after the speech of the representative of the Belgian Foreign Ministry in parliament, the deputies did not take any document or decision.
“There was a discussion in the Commission of the draft resolution, which will soon be put to a vote at the plenary session of the parliament. The approved draft resolution does not contain a provision on
recognition of the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh and the establishment of diplomatic relations. The Belgian Foreign Ministry insisted on removing this item, calling it "a red line that cannot be crossed," the source said.
The members of the committee were forced to accept these recommendations of the government and make an amendment, unpleasant for the Armenian lobbyists, and remove the "recognition" clause. At the same time, they approved an amendment to include in the text of the document references to 4
resolutions of the UN Security Council. This is important because the draft resolution requires resolving the issue of the final status of Nagorno-Karabakh. The 4 UN Security Council resolutions contain the phrase "The Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Azerbaijan Republic".
There are, of course, unpleasant moments in the text of the draft resolution, such as the accusation of Azerbaijan's "aggression", criticism of Turkey's role in this conflict, references to the mythical "Syrian mercenaries", and the alleged "war crimes" of the Azerbaijani side.
This is the situation today. Of course, the final text of the resolution may change as the Armenian lobbyists make great efforts to eliminate the reference to the four UN Security Council resolutions on Karabakh.
News in Armenian media pursues a face-saving goal. They shamefully hide the fact of removal the most important provisions for them from the draft resolution," said the same source.
Once approved at parliamentary level, the resolution will be advisory to the Belgian government. —0—
