CDSI notes significant increase in non-combat losses of Azerbaijani Armed Forces
Baku/30.07.23/Turan: In the first 7 months of 2023 irrecoverable losses of Azerbaijan's sector and security amounted to 44 servicemen, Caspian Defence Studies Institute (CDSI - reported on 30 July.
According to the Institute, 9 people died in combat conditions, including 7 as a result of shelling from the Armenian side and 2 as a result of being blown up by mines.
The remaining 35 military men died outside combat conditions, including 4 as a result of road accidents, 7 from various diseases, 2 from armed attack, 1 from non-statutory relations, 1 from negligence, 3 from accidents.
Another 17 servicemen committed suicide, including 12 in the zone of armed conflict with Armenia.
The CDSI also reported at least 9 injuries, the vast majority of which occurred in combat situations.
The Institute notes a serious increase in non-combat casualties, and in particular suicides. All of this makes it urgent to implement immediate reforms in the defence and security sector structures, CDSİ stresses.
The Institute has been monitoring the losses of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces since 2003 and during this period the losses totalled 4,463 servicemen, including 3,582 combat losses (about 3,000 were during the 44-day war in Karabakh in 2020) and 881 non-combat losses.
The number of wounded and injured military personnel totalled 13.000 in 2022. At the same time, 87 of them were combat losses and 58 were non-combat losses.
Recall that the Caspian Defence Studies Institute (CDSI) started its work in February 2015 in Germany. One of its founders was Jasur Sumerinli, who headed the Doctrine Centre for Journalistic Military Studies until his departure from Azerbaijan in September 2014.-06B-

On January 24, the Sabail District Court continued the trial of Aziz Orujov, the head of the online publication Kanal-13. According to lawyer Fahraddin Mehdiyev, at the beginning of the hearing, the judge rejected a petition filed at the previous hearing to transfer Orujov to house arrest. The defense then petitioned for journalists to be allowed into the trial and for conditions to be created for them to conduct filming.

On January 24, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Commander of the Land Forces, Colonel General Hikmat Mirzayev, arrived on an official visit to Türkiye. According to the Ministry of Defense's statement, the Azerbaijani delegation was received by the Commander of the Turkish Land Forces, Army General Selçuk Bayraktaroglu.
