"Clean Sea starts with you!"
Baku/19.09.20/Turan: On 19 September, the EU Delegation organised #EUBeachCleanup campaign jointly with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan as part of the International Coastal Clean-up Day.
Minister of environment and natural resources Mukhtar Babayev, head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Kestutis Jankauskas and Latvian Ambassador Dainis Garancs were present at the beach cleaning event.
The representatives of the EU Member State Embassies, EU projects implemented in Azerbaijan, Young European Ambassadors, EBRD, GIZ and local companies like “AzEkol”, “EkoSfera” Social and Environmental Center and young volunteers took part as well.
5 hectares of land in the coastal area of Jorat settlement of Sumgayit have been cleaned of plastic and other waste. Special containers have been installed with the support of the EU Delegation to sort the waste on the beach.
The intention was not only to leave one of the Absheron beaches nice and clean, but also help to attract media and public attention to the challenges of marine littering and plastic waste.
The event was organised in a safe and secure way respecting social distancing in accordance of current COVID-19 regulations.
Every year in September, the EU organises awareness-raising campaign - #EUBeachCleanup. In 2019, over 40,000 volunteers were mobilised in nearly 80 countries including Azerbaijan, according to the EU delegation to Azerbaijan. -0—

European observers are creating "distrust" between Baku and Brussels, stated President Ilham Aliyev on Monday during the presentation of credentials by the new Belgian ambassador, Julien de Frepon. Aliyev emphasized that the "binocular diplomacy" of the European monitoring mission is unacceptable and contributes to distrust in Azerbaijan's relations with the European Union. He questioned the necessity of extending the mission and increasing its numbers without consulting Baku.

Afgan Sadigov, the founder of the Azerbaijani website Azel TV, collapsed in a prison hospital in Georgia while on the 24th day of his hunger strike. His wife, Sevinc Sadigova, reported this, stating that he fell unconscious while trying to drink water and woke up to find doctors around him. Blood tests were taken, but he could not recall how long he had been unconscious.

This year, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Daron Acemoglu, James Robinson, and Simon Johnson for their research on the differences in national wealth. Daron Acemoglu is a Turkish citizen of Armenian descent. He graduated from Galatasaray High School in Istanbul in 1986.
