Court keeps Gubad Ibadoglu under arrest
Baku/01.08.23/Turan: The Narimanov district court of Baku on 1 August considered the defence's petition to place the head of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party Gubad Ibadoglu under house arrest.
Lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova told reporters that the defence submitted to the court medical documents testifying to Ibadoglu's illnesses.
"He suffers from diabetes mellitus, hypertension. Treatment of diabetes, in addition to taking medication, requires the patient to lead an active lifestyle, move a lot. In freedom, Gubad Ibadoglu used to exercise, walking 5 kilometres every day to keep his blood sugar normal. There are no conditions for this in the pre-trial detention centre. For this reason, after his arrest, his blood sugar and blood pressure rose sharply," the lawyer said.
Besides, Ibadoglu is a scientist-economist, professor and because of the arrest he is forced to stop his scientific activity.
"We drew the court's attention to the fact that Ibadoglu is ready to come to the investigation at the first call. He himself is interested in a speedy investigation and acquittal as the charges against him have no basis. If he wanted to go into hiding, he would not have returned to the country," Sadigova said.
However, the court left the petition without satisfaction. Now the defence will file an appeal against the court's decision, the lawyer said.
* The head of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party Gubad Ibadoglu was detained on 23 July in the afternoon. On Monday, he was charged under Article 204 .3.1 (production for sale, as well as purchase or sale of counterfeit money or foreign currency, as part of an organised group) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Under this Article, he faces a sentence of 8 to 12 years' imprisonment. On 24 July, the court arrested him for 4 months during the investigation. Local and human rights organisations condemned Ibadoglu's persecution and demanded his release. On 28 July, the Court of Appeal upheld Ibadoglu's arrest.
** Last month Ibadoglu, together with the head of the National Council, Professor Jamil Hasanli and disgraced diplomat Arif Mammadov, who is in political exile in Europe, announced the creation of the Azerbaijani Youth Education Foundation, which was registered in London.
Ibadoglu came up with an initiative to confiscate the property of Azerbaijani officials abroad and transfer these funds to the said Foundation. -06В-
