DNA analysis can help identify missing persons

Baku/30.08.19/Turan: In Azerbaijan, 3888 people are reported missing during the Karabakh war. According to the State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, of which 3622 are men, 266 are women. 3,170 missing persons are military personnel and 718 are civilians, including 71 children.

These data were announced on Friday at a round table at the National Committee of the Helsinki Civil Assembly, dedicated to the International Day of the Missing.

Despite many years passed since the ceasefire in 1994, the search for the missing continues, the head of the National Committee of the Helsinki Civil Assembly (NC HCA) Arzu Abdullaeva noted.

Over the period of the conflict, 1,477 Azerbaijani citizens (1,123 men and 354 women) were released from captivity, and the NCHCA played a significant role in this, said Abdullayeva.

During the discussions, it was noted that if after so many years it was not possible to find servicemen, then they should be awarded martyr status and the family should receive material compensation.

There is a need to investigate the mass graves in the conflict region with DNA analysis in order to establish the identities of the unknown. Currently, the Red Cross is implementing a similar project and biological materials have already been collected from relatives of 2500 missing persons. This was announced by the head of the NGO "Coalition of Cooperation for Peace" Avaz Hasanov.

Discussion participants criticized the heartless attitude of government officials towards the families of the missing. -03C-
