Ex-Deputy of Azerbaijani Parliament Detained
Baku/04.07.23/Turan: Former member of the Azerbaijani parliament Nazim Beydemirli was detained by the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs as a suspect in connection with the events in the village of Seyudlyu, Gadabay region.
Lawyer Agil Laij wrote about this on his Facebook page.
“He just called and informed me,” the lawyer said.
Beydemirli himself on the afternoon of July 4 wrote on his Facebook page that he had arrived at the police.
By midnight, Beydemirli's mobile phone received calls, but no one answered them.
His facebook page was also active, but he did not respond to inquiries.
Lawyer Laij was also not available.
In turn, the head of the press service sector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Zeyni Huseynov, said that Beydemirli was involved in the investigation on the basis of an appeal from a certain citizen.
“Thus, the citizen turned to the police and said that Beydemirli demanded 50,000 manats from him, threatening to distribute defamatory images. On June 14, he gave Beydemirli 10,000 manats, but he continued to blackmail the citizen by distributing footage that discredited him,” Huseynov said.
He added that Beydemirli was detained on the basis of this appeal, "the investigation is ongoing."
Beydemirli was a member of the Azerbaijani Parliament from the Gadabay region.
After protests in the village of Seyudlu, he stated the validity of citizens' claims about the harmful effects on human health and the environment of the activities of a nearby gold mining enterprise.
* On June 20, the people of Seyudlu held a protest, claiming that a nearby gold mining enterprise was polluting the environment. The police violently dispersed the protest. As a result of the dispersal, 10 people were injured, five were detained and administratively arrested for 20 days. Another resident was fined 1,500 manats. Several more people were later detained. However, law enforcement agencies do not report the number of detainees and the acts imputed to them.-03B06-
