German President called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to continue peace talks mediated by the European Union
Baku/14.01.23/Turan: On January 13, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a separate telephone conversations with the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Vahan Khachaturian, and discussed the situation in the region.
“During a telephone conversation, the President of Germany stressed that his country is interested in good relations with the states of the South Caucasus and the importance of stability in the region. He called on both sides to continue trilateral peace talks with the European Union, led by European Council President Charles Miche, - reads a press reliase of the President of Germany.
In turn, the press service of the President of Azerbaijan reported that during the conversation, the presidents expressed satisfaction with the current state of the Azerbaijani-German relations and discussed the prospects for cooperation.
Speaking about regional security, Frank-Walter Steinmeier stressed that Germany supports the EU-Azerbaijan-Armenia trilateral format with the participation of the head of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel.
Ilham Aliyev noted that he highly appreciates the trilateral talks with the support of Charles Michel and reaffirmed his commitment to the negotiation process within the trilateral EU-Azerbaijan-Armenia format, the report says.
The parties also discussed the situation on the Khankandi-Lachin road in Azerbaijan. President Aliyev dismissed Armenia's claim that the road was "blocked" as "a lie". The free movement of humanitarian cargoes is ensured on the road through the International Committee of the Red Cross.
In turn, the press service of the President of Armenia reported that during the telephone conversation the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh was discussed in detail and views were exchanged on resolving the problem.
“Expressing full support for the peace process, Steinmeier noted that Germany is ready to make every effort to resolve the situation and establish peace,” the statement said.
President Khachaturian confirmed that the Armenian side is ready to fulfill all the obligations arising from the tripartite statements and expects the same from Azerbaijan.-03B-
