Ilgar Mammadov re-elected chair of ReAl
Baku/18.08.20/Turan: At a meeting of the political council of the Republican Alternative (ReAl) party, Ilgar Mammadov was elected chair of this opposition organization, according to the member of the political committee Natig Jafarli.
All six members of the political committee have nominated their candidates for the post of chair, he said.
“However, in accordance with the charter of the party, and on the basis of an internal consensus, all other candidates recused themselves in favor of Ilgar Mammadov. The party chair elected for 4 years until the next regular congress. One person cannot hold the post of party leader for more than 8 years,” Jafarli explained.
On August 4 was held a founding congress of the Republican Alternative Party (ReAl).
The congress approved the charter, program documents, logo, banner and seal of the organization.
In addition, a political committee of six people was formed, which included Ilgar Mammadov, Erkin Gadirli, Rasul Jafarov, Natiq Jafarli, Zaur Gurbanli and Mahmud Mahmudov.
The ReAl party is the successor to the movement of the same name, created in 2009 under the leadership of Ilgar Mammadov. The process of transforming the organization into a party dragged on due to the arrest of Mammadov in 2013 and his five-year imprisonment.
The ECHR twice recognized the illegality of the arrest of Mammadov and his conviction in connection with the unrest in the city of Ismayilli in January 2013. In April of this year, the Plenum of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, pursuant to the decisions of the ECHR, fully acquitted Mammadov and awarded him monetary compensation. –21B06-
