Kocharyan threatens Pashinyan from prison
Baku / 08.05.19 / Turan: Former Armenian President Robert Kocharian, who is under arrest, gave an interview to Reuters. He stated that powerful opposition forces are consolidating in order to challenge the new leadership of the country in the near future, and he intends to join the fight against the Armenian authorities.
Kocharyan, a former president of Armenia in 1998-2008, was arrested last year on charges of committing illegal actions by imposing a state of emergency in the country after the presidential elections in March 2008.
In a letter from prison, Kocharyan told the agency that the charges against him are politically motivated; he accused the government of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of arbitrarily applying the law.
Kocharyan said that new opposition parties are emerging in Armenia. "This process will certainly lead to the creation of a powerful political force capable of challenging the new authorities very soon," he said. When asked if he would personally join the ranks of this opposition, he replied: "Yes, of course." -02D-
