Peskov: Russia has obligations under the CSTO to Armenia, but not to Karabakh
Moscow / 07.10.20 / Turan: Russia, fulfilling its obligations under the Collective Security Treaty, can defend Armenia, but these obligations do not apply to Nagorno-Karabakh, Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Wednesday.
"Obligations in terms of ensuring security: if a CSTO member country is exposed to some kind of aggression, attack from the outside, then in this case the member states of the treaty have obligations to defend such a state," the Kremlin spokesman said.
Answering the question in which case the Russian Federation is ready to send the military to the conflict zone in Nagorno-Karabakh, Peskov stressed that "this follows from the obligations" within the framework of the CSTO. "In this case, we are talking about Armenia, Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly explained and delimited these two issues - the CSTO obligations do not apply to Karabakh," Peskov said. In his words, the information that some military actions are being conducted on the territory of Armenia is not confirmed. -02D-
