The Azerbaijani side has officially confirmed the occupation of strategic heights on the border with Armenia
Baku/16.08.19/Turan: In recent days, Azerbaijani border guards have occupied a number of strategic heights on the border with Armenia. This was officially confirmed by the head of the State Border Service (GPS) apparatus, Major General Elchin Ibrahimov.
"Strategic heights have been occupied, and it has expanded the optimal capabilities for controlling important routes of movement in the territory of Armenia. These actions were caused by the attempts of the Armenian side to take control of strategic positions in this direction of the state border, as well as the desire to ensure the security of border settlements and units of the State Border Service (SBS) of Azerbaijan," he said.
Ibrahimov called the advance of the Azerbaijani border troops in this sector "significant." However, he did not specify how far the SBS forces had advanced. "For certain understandable reasons, it is impossible to provide more extensive information on this issue," he said.
Ibrahimov said that the transfer of the border section in the Gazakh and Agstafa regions under the control of the State Border Guard Service last fall was aimed at further increasing the combat readiness of the military units and units of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, creating new reserve forces and strengthening the combat readiness of personnel.
Over the 9 months since the transfer of these sections of the border with Armenia to the SBS control, the Gazakh border division was created, and it strengthened its position on this section of the border.
Ibrahimov believes that strengthening the SBS units in the direction of the border section in the Gazakh and Agstafa regions is "the beginning of a big process."
He recalled that currently 132 km of the Azerbaijani-Iranian and 435 km of the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border is under the occupation of Armenia.
Earlier media reported that the SBS took control of four strategic heights on the border with Armenia. - 06D--
