The court trial in the case of Vugar Safarli
Baku/22.07.21/Turan: A preparatory trial in the case of the former executive director of the abolished State Support Fund for Media Development Vugar Safarli and other defendants is scheduled for July 23 at the Baku Serious Crimes Court. The trial will be chaired by Azer Pashayev.
A preliminary investigation into the case of illegal actions of the Foundation's employees was conducted at the General Directorate for Combating Corruption under the Prosecutor General.
According to the Safarli investigation, in conspiracy with Benyamin Ismailov, Adalyat Veliyev, Nadir Mammadov, Bakhtiyar Fatullayev, Temkin Khalilov, Telman Tairov, Tahmina Yagubova, Valeh Orudjev, Shahin Ibrahimov and thus misappropriated state funds million 500 thousand manats.
They are also charged with official forgery, falsification of documents, as well as the legalization of illegally obtained 5.7 million manats.
The defendants were charged under the Articles of the Criminal Code: 179.4 (embezzlement on an especially large scale), 193-1.3.2 (legalization of funds obtained by criminal means), 308.2 (abuse of office, entailing grave consequences), 313 (official forgery) and other articles. Safarli is in custody, the rest of the defendants are under police surveillance.
One of the victims in the case was the Media Development Agency created on the basis of the Fund.
Safarli was dismissed from his position as executive director of the fund by presidential decree dated April 4, 2020. On January 14 this year, he was arrested.-05D06-

On January 24, the Baku Court of Appeals considered an appeal regarding the arrest of journalist Farid Ismailov. According to his lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova, the defense argued that there was no need to keep the journalist in custody, citing his health problems and the fact that the preliminary investigation had already been completed.
