The ECHR announced decisions on the cases of 3 journalists and 1 activist
Baku/16.05.23/Turan: On May 11, the European Court of Human Rights announced decisions on the cases of 3 Azerbaijani journalists and a religious activist. The applicants, in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 5 of the European Convention of Human Rights, complained about the unreasonableness of their pre-trial detention.
The ECHR recognized the violation of the applicants' rights and decided to pay journalists Ikram Rahim and Elchin Ismayilli 1,750 euros in compensation for moral damage and another 1,750 euros for reimbursement of court costs.
Religious activist Ruzi Ismailov will receive 4,000 euros for moral damages and another 2,800 euros to cover court costs.
Journalist Polad Aslanov was awarded compensation in the amount of 1800 euros for moral damage and 1700 euros for reimbursement of court costs.
Rahimov being the site manager "Realliq.info " he was detained on October 26, 2018 by the staff of the State Security Service. In June 2019 he was found guilty under Article 182.2.2 (extortion by threats) and sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison. In December 2020, he was released on parole.
Independent journalist Elchin Ismayilli was also arrested in February 2017 on charges of extortion by threats and abuse of official authority and subsequently sentenced to 9 years in prison. In March 2021, he was pardoned.
Polad Aslanov, the founder and editor of the website Xeberman.com, was detained in June 2019 and subsequently sentenced to 16 years in prison under Article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code. Subsequently, the Supreme Court reduced his sentence to 13 years in prison.
Ismailov was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the Nardaran events of 2015. In March 2019, he was pardoned. ---06B---

On the evening of February 5, it was reported that journalist Shahnaz Beylargizi had been arrested. She had been a presenter on the Toplum TV channel for several years. After a criminal case was initiated against the channel in March 2024 and nearly all of its staff were arrested, Beylargizi was questioned multiple times.
