The former diplomat charged under two Articles of the Criminal Code
Former diplomat Emin Ibrahimov was charged under Articles 126.2.4 (intentional infliction of serious harm to health from hooligan motives) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. According to these Articles, he faces up to 11 years in prison, his lawyer Agyl Laidj wrote on Facebook.
"This is how Emin described what happened. On July 22, he was walking to his home, where repairs are underway, when a stranger attacked him and started his clothes. Seconds later, the police appeared, detained Emin and took him to the 24th branch of the Nizami district police department.
This criminal case is fabricated and related to his critical statements," the lawyer wrote. According to him, Ibrahimov will appear before the Nizami District Court in the coming hours to elect a preventive measure against him.
* In 2005, Ibrahimov graduated with a Master's degree in International Relations from Ankara University. In 2009, he studied at the Higher Courses of the NATO Defense College.
In 2007-2020, Ibrahimov was in the diplomatic service: in 2012-2016. He worked as a second secretary of the Azerbaijani Embassy in the United States, and in 2016-2020 he was the Charge d'affaires of Azerbaijan in Uruguay.
In protest against the falsification of the 2020 parliamentary elections, Ibrahimov resigned from the diplomatic service. After that, he was engaged in analytical work, making comments in the media and social networks.
Ibrahimov sharply criticized the authorities for deteriorating relations with the West and rapprochement with Russia and other authoritarian states.
In September 2023, Ibrahimov was administratively arrested for 30 days for publishing an article entitled "Politics playing into Russia's hands."
