The monument to Stepan Shahumyan was dismantled in Khankendi

Baku/09.11.23/Turan: The monument to the Bolshevik Stepan Shaumyan was dismantled in Khankendi.

Vladimir Lenin's ally Shaumyan was appointed by him to the Extraordinary Commissioners for Caucasian Affairs in December 1917. In March 1918, Armenian Dashnak detachments subordinate to the Baku Council led by Shaumyan committed massacres of Azerbaijanis in Baku, Shamakhi, Guba and other eastern regions of Azerbaijan.

In August 1918, the Baku Council of People's Commissars, headed by Shaumyan, was liquidated and its commissars were arrested by the new Socialist-Revolutionary-Menshevik government of the “Dictatorship of the Central Caspian Sea”. In September 1918, the commissars were taken to Krasnovodsk and shot in the deserts of Turkmenistan.

After the establishment of Soviet power in Azerbaijan and the creation of the Nagoorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region within it, the city of Khankendi was renamed “Stepanakert” in honor of Shahumyan.

Let us recall that in 2009 the memorial complex was dismantled in Baku
“26 Baku Commissars”, and their remains were reburied in the city cemetery. –06V-
