The Norwegian House of Human Rights called for the release of Yagublu and Hajiyev
Baku/10.01.23/Turan: The Norwegian House of Human Rights called for the release of opposition politician Tofig Yagublu and social activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev in Azerbaijan.
“We are concerned about the politically motivated case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev and call on the Azerbaijani authorities to release him immediately. Yesterday, Hajiyev resumed his hunger strike after the decision of the Baku Court of Appeal, which did not satisfy his complaint about the refusal to release him from custody,” the message on the organization’s Twitter account says.
Another publication of the Norwegian organization points to the unjustified arrest of Tofig Yagublu.
“On December 23, a prominent Azerbaijani activist Tofig Yagublu was arrested for peacefully demanding the release of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev. He has been on a hunger strike since January 5 and his condition is deteriorating. We call for his immediate release and the dropping of all charges,” emphasizes the Norwegian Human Rights House.
* Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces and the Musavat Party, was detained on December 23 at a protest rally in central Baku demanding the release of public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev.
On the same day, the Sabail court arrested him for 30 days on charges of hooliganism and insubordination to the police. On January 5, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld this decision. In protest, Yagublu went on a hunger strike.
* * Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was detained on December 9 on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days.
On December 15, Hajiyev went on a hunger strike demanding his release from custody. On the evening of December 28, he ended his hunger strike after persistent appeals from members of the public and family members. However, on January 9, Hajiyev resumed his hunger strike, after the appeal court once again rejected his complaint about arrest. -03Г‚06-
