The Supreme Court cancelled the decision to confiscate the property of the chief of the Media Support Fund convicted of corruption
Baku/28.03.23/Turan: On March 28, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan cancelled the decision to confiscate the property of Vugar Safarli, the former executive director of the State Media Support Fund, as well as the director of "Portos" LLC Nadir Mammadov and other defendants of this year. The Supreme Court sent the case for re-investigation to the Baku Court of Appeal, reported Safarli's lawyer Hikmet Aliyev.
At the same time, the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Appellate Instance on the merits of the charges. The former head of the liquidated State Fund for Media Support, Vugar Safarli, was imprisoned for 10 years and 6 months in 2021. Mammadov received 6 years in prison, the remaining 9 defendants in the case received a suspended sentence.
Safarli was found guilty of embezzlement of at least 18 million manats during 2015-2018. These funds were plundered during the construction of houses for journalists. Some of the funds were embezzled when allocating money for media support and events.
During the trial, the question was repeatedly raised that part of the stolen funds were transferred to Ali Hasanov, the assistant to the head of state, but the court did not summon Hasanov to the trial.
Safarli's land plots in various parts of Baku and its suburbs, houses and apartments with a total value of several million manats were confiscated by a court decision.
In addition, the court confiscated Safarli's land plots in Ismayilli, as well as several of his expensive cars. The court also confiscated funds on Safarli's accounts in various banks totaling 1 million manats. ---03D06---
