UN Secretary General Calls Leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia
Baku / 22.07.20 / Turan: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on July 22 called the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
Guterres expressed concern over the military clashes that took place on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and expressed regret over the loss of life, the Azerbaijani President's press service reported. The UN Secretary General also noted that the status quo in the negotiations related to the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict cannot last forever. He called for an end to hostilities and continued negotiations.
President Aliyev expressed his gratitude to the UN Secretary General for the phone call and personal attention to the events at the border. The head of state said the Armenian side fired on not only Azerbaijani servicemen, but also Azerbaijani villages, as a result of which a 76-year-old resident of the border village died along with the servicemen. As a result of the adequate response of the Azerbaijani army, the attack from Armenia was suppressed, and at present the situation has relatively stabilized.
Aliyev stressed that the clashes took place far from the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent regions. At the same time, he noted that Azerbaijan has no military targets on the territory of Armenia. We just have to defend our territories and our citizens.
The head of state noted that he agreed with the idea of the UN Secretary General that the status quo could not last forever, and stressed that Azerbaijan had always taken a constructive position.
However, the statements of the Armenian Prime Minister that “Nagorno-Karabakh is Armenia”, as well as that “Azerbaijan should negotiate not with Armenia, but Nagorno-Karabakh” pose a serious threat to the negotiation process.
He stated that for about 30 years Armenia has been ignoring the UN Security Council resolutions demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
Guterres also had a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan today. -06B-
