UN Secretary General welcomes joint statement by Baku and Yerevan
Baku/09.12.23/Turan: UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomes the joint statement issued the previous day by the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said this at a briefing in New York on Friday.
In their statement, Azerbaijan and Armenia noted that today there is a "historic opportunity to achieve long-awaited peace in the region". Both countries reaffirmed their intention to normalise relations and reach a peace treaty based on respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"The Secretary-General welcomes the joint statement by Armenia and Azerbaijan announcing a series of confidence-building measures and reaffirming their commitment to the normalisation of bilateral relations," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized on Friday.
"The United Nations calls on the parties to rely on the agreement reached in order to pursue mutual trust and long-term peace for the benefit of the people throughout the region," the statement said.-0-
