Under public pressure, Pashinyan refused to be ready to sign peace with Azerbaijan
Baku/15.09.12/Turan: Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Yerevan last night, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. They were outraged by his statement about his readiness to sign peace with Azerbaijan.
Speaking in the Parliament, Pashinyan said: "We want to sign a document for which many may criticize us, curse us, call us traitors, the people may even decide to remove us from power, but we will be grateful if the Republic of Armenia receives lasting peace and security on an area of 29.800 square kilometers.".
These words were interpreted as a willingness to recognize Karabakh as a part of Azerbaijan.
Immediately after that, the leaders of the Karabakh separatists made statements that they did not recognize the document stipulating Karabakh as a part of Azerbaijan.
Pashinyan was forced to declare on the air that he had not signed anything and was not going to. He accused the opposition and external forces of "information sabotage".
Similar statements were made by the Speaker of the Parliament Alain Simonyan and the head of the Security Council Arthur Grigoryan.
Nevertheless, opposition MPs have launched a campaign demanding Pashinyan's impeachment.
What is happening shows that the Armenian society, and above all, the Karabakh Armenians, are not ready to give up the root cause of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict – the demand to withdraw Karabakh from Azerbaijan and transfer it to Armenia. -02B-
