US closely monitoring Gubad Ibadoglu's arrest
Baku/24.07.23/Turan: The US Embassy in Azerbaijan is closely monitoring the situation with the arrest of opposition politician Gubad Ibadoglu.
This was stated in the American embassy in response to a request from the Azerbaijani service of the Voice of America.
"We are closely following the arrest of Gubad Ibadoglu.
The United States remains strongly committed to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
We urge Azerbaijan to protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of its citizens, including Gubad Ibadoglu, consistent with Azerbaijan’s own constitution and international obligations and commitments", the US diplomatic mission stressed.
Ibadoglu was detained on July 23 in the afternoon. On Monday, he was charged under Art. 204.3.1 (manufacturing for sale, as well as the acquisition or sale of counterfeit money or foreign currency as part of an organized group) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Under this article, he faces a sentence of imprisonment from 8 to 12 years. Today, the court arrested him for the period of investigation for a period of 4 months.
Last month, Ibadoglu, together with the head of the National Council, Professor Jamil Hasanli and disgraced diplomat Arif Mammadov, who is in political exile in Europe, announced the establishment of the Azerbaijani Youth Education Fund, registered in London.
Ibadoglu took the initiative to confiscate the property of Azerbaijani officials abroad and transfer these funds to this fund. ---06B---
