Washington D.C./06.06.23/Turan:  The United States said on Monday it "monitors closely" the cases of those who were arrested and detained last weeked during an anti-government rally in Tbilisi, while demonstrating peacefully in front of the parliament, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.

"The rights to peacefully assemble and the freedom of expression are core human rights and fundamental to democracy,"  Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told a daily press briefing.

He went on to add, "... A lack of tolerance for dissent is inconsistent with the values of the Euro-Atlantic family of nations, which the majority of people of Georgia wish to join."

A number of human rights defenders and activists had been arrested for holding paper banners at the June 2 rally. Some have reportedly been released after 48 hours in pretrial detention.
