U.S. Urges Georgia To 'Ensure That Saakashvili’s Human Rights Protected'
Washington D.C./18.05.23/Turan: The U.S. on Wednesday urged Georgian authorities to ensure that former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s human rights are protected and "that he is receiving the appropriate medical care that he needs," as the State Department put it, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"We pay close attention to the statements coming from the public defender’s office," Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told TURAN's correspondent during a daily briefing.
Saakashvili, imprisoned in Tbilisi for more than a year and half, is reportedly in critical condition and, according to his family, his health is deteriorating.
Asked whether Washington was sending a wrong signal by leaving Saakashvili’s life in the hands of the Georgian Dream government, Patel pushed back by saying, "I don’t think we’re sending the wrong signal. We have been very clear that we think that his human rights need to be protected, and that he should receive the appropriate medical care that he needs."
