U.S. Watches 'With Concern' As Azerbaijan-Iran Tension Continues
Washington D.C./14.03.23/Turan: The State Department on Monday reacted to the latest tension between Baku and Tehran over the flight of an Iranian warplane on the border, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"Iran has long been a malign actor in the region. It’s engaged in malign activities, activities that threaten its neighbors both near and far," outgoing spokesperson Ned Price told a daily press briefing in response to TURAN's questions.
"We watch these types of tensions with concern," Price said.
He went on to add: "Our approach has been to invest in our engagement with Azerbaijan, with Armenia in the South Caucasus to... create a South Caucasus region that is more stable, that is less prone to conflict, that is less prone to tension."
Baku claims that an Iranian warplane last weekend continuously flew near the border for more than 40 minutes at a distance of 3-5 kilometers. Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry on Saturday summoned the Iranian ambassador to Baku to protest the incident, which it regarded as “provocative and unfriendly.”
