World Organization against Torture: Stop Pressure on Leyla Yunus and Her Lawyers
The World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) on November 6 issued a statement condemning the ongoing pressure on the arrested human rights activist Leyla Yunus and her lawyers.
OMCT expresses surprise and indignation with the extension of the detention of Leyla Yunus and her husband Arif Yunus for another 4 months, and with the removal of their lawyers from their protection.
The organization calls on the authorities of Azerbaijan to take immediate and appropriate action to ensure the medical, physical and psychological integrity of the spouses Yunus, to stop the growing repression against Azerbaijani NGOs, and to immediately and unconditionally release the detained human rights defenders.
Moreover, OMCT recalls the UN Declaration of 9 December 1998 on the need to protect human rights and other international instruments ratified by the government of Azerbaijan, the commitments on human rights and fundamental freedoms. -16D-
