Historical Part of Sheki Included in UNESCO World Heritage List
Baku / 07.07.19 / Turan: The historical center of the city of Sheki, along with the Palace of Sheki Khans, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This decision was made on July 7 at the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku.
As noted in the press release of the organization, the city of Sheki is located at the foot of the Greater Caucasus mountains.
The historic center of the city was restored after a devastating flood in the 18th century.
The old town is characterized by a traditional architectural ensemble of houses with high gabled roofs. The architecture of Sheki, located along important historical trade routes, was influenced by Safavid, Gadjar and Russian construction traditions. "The Khan Palace located in the northeast of the city, and a number of trading houses reflect the wealth generated by sericulture and silk cocoon trade from the late 18th to the 19th century," the press release said.
The Palace of Sheki Khans is a two-story building, which is surrounded by walls. The palace consists of six rooms-halls, four corridors and two mirror balconies. The style of the building absorbed the local traditions of the Caucasian architecture of the time and at the same time the centuries of the best examples of Islamic architecture.
The historic center of the city together with the palace covers an area of 120 hectares.
Sheki is located 400 km northwest of Baku.
We remind that earlier the historical center of Baku - the Old Baku Fortress with the Shirvanshah Palace and the Maiden Tower, as well as the Cultural Landscape of the rock drawings of the Gobustan Nature Reserve were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. -06D--
