Screening of "The Joke" in Baku, 2 April
Baku/16.03.22/Turan: Based on a novel by Milan Kundera, the 1969 Czech film “The Joke” will be screened at the Landmark Baku Cine Club on 2 April 2022, 20:00, with Azerbaijani and French subtitles. Organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Azerbaijan, the screening takes place in the framework of the 2022 Francophonie Days and on the occasion of Milan Kundera's 93rd birthday.
The film by Jaromil Jireš was soon banned by Czechoslovak authorities, making it „one of the Czechoslovak New Wave’s most renowned casualties“. Its story, sadly based on so many real life stories affected by the Stalinist régime, highlights the juxtaposition between what one is able to call a joke and the serious consequences it can bring about for people, and between behaviour driven by belief, will and determination and the overall sad vanity of human existence.
"Despite the fact that Milan Kundera himself has always been critical of the film adaptations of his works, we decided to present this film to you in order to attract more attention to his work, part of which is available in translations into Azerbaijani," the organizers said.
Visitors will be allowed to watch the film upon presenting a valid COVID-19 passport (proving administration of a booster shot or recovery from the disease/administration of the 2nd vaccine dose in the past 180 days). Please come at least 15 minutes before the screening.—0—
