Started Week of Memory Dedicated to Centennial of Beginning of World War I

In the center of German culture in Azerbaijan Kapellhaus in Baku on November 24 opened a photo exhibition Berlin and Paris until 1914. It launched the activities within the Week of Memory in connection with the century that passed since the beginning of the First World War. It is held by the embassies of France and Germany in Azerbaijan.

As noted at the ceremony to mark the opening of the exhibition and the Week of Memory the German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Heidrun Temple, the First World War was one of the biggest disasters of the 20th century, which killed millions of people. The war had devastating consequences for a large number of countries and inflicted heavy damage on the political, economic and social life of Europe.

However, Temple focused attention on the fact that Germany and France - the two largest European states subsequently managed to overcome hostility, to restore relations and actively collaborate together to build a modern European family.

In turn, the French Ambassador to Azerbaijan Pascal Monnier pointed to the need to draw lessons from history, so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

"And in the current difficult situation in the world and the region, we hope that our address to the world will be heard," said Monnier.

He stressed that modern France and Germany have strong friendly relations and cooperation in many areas.

The exhibition features photos taken at the beginning of the XX century and during the First World War, which reflect the life of Paris and Berlin at the time.

The exhibition will last for a week.

In addition, during the Week of Memory on November 25 the movie No Change on the Southern Front will be shown, filmed on the basis of the novel by Erich Maria Remarque.

In the evening on November 26 with the participation of the National Academy of Sciences there will be a presentation of the German historian Volker Venor.

On November 27, the singer Farida Mamedova will perform songs from the First World War, and letters from German, French and British soldiers sent from the front in those years will be read.

On November 28 there will be presentation of the book «The war brought to light: 14-18 through stained glass" with the participation of the author Jean-Claude Lescour. -0
